“Bone Roofing Supply is a family business,” said Jason Bone, VP of Sales, Bone Roofing Supply, Inc. Started by his grandfather in 1971, Bone Roofing Supply was created — where so many great ideas come to life — at the dinner table.

After 20 years in the industry, Clay Bone set out on his dream of owning his own roofing supply business. He had spotted a warehouse in the city and explained to his wife, Hope, that he had the manufacturing side figured out — all he needed was labor and funding.

With two twin boys in college, they quickly found the laborers, and with strong confidence in their sons, they decided to take out a second mortgage on their home. The rest is history. Built on trust, with a mission to create long-lasting relationships with employees, customers, and vendors, Bone Roofing Supply was born.

Looking for a local lender

After years of successful service, the family began to see explosive growth in sales. In order to support this growth, the company saw a need to increase their borrowing facilities in order to support rising inventory and receivable levels. With this increased need for funding, it was the perfect time to talk with Wintrust about moving their banking relationship.

“Being a local business in Chicago, we’ve always worked with community banks, but over time as the banking world evolved, a lot of those smaller banks that we worked with started getting acquired by larger national footprint banks,” said Bone.

Beginning to feel the distance from their lender, they were looking to find a situation that spoke to their business model — a situation where a person picked up their phone and took the time to get to know the ins and outs of their business — a person they could trust.

“We had no relationship with our lender. It became the right time to have a sit-down and work with Tony at Wintrust to meet our needs without having to have that big bank feel,” said Bone.

A relationship reflective of their mission

Tony Abbott, Division Manager of Wintrust Commercial Banking, explains the dynamic that created a successful partnership: “They were looking to grow and Wintrust understood what they wanted to accomplish to be most efficient but also getting them great products and service. And we put together a facility that allowed them to do that,” said Abbott.

It comes down to so much more than dollars and cents. With strong company values to uphold, Bone Roofing Supply was not only looking for a means to grow but for a partner who fully understood their business. “Their team was in place to educate my team and show us how to use all of these tools that we had previously had zero experience with at any of our other banking relationships,” said Bone.

“It’s that holistic approach of having depth to the relationship and serving their needs, and that’s really a foundation of what Wintrust Commercial Banking is all about,” said Abbott. The company, the dynamic is significantly different from where it was 10 years ago. They’ve increased in size five times over.”

Bone is looking forward to further growth and watching to see how future generations can continue to evolve the foundation his grandparents created.
