In December 1991, Wintrust’s founders opened a storefront community bank in Lake Forest, Illinois.
We knew that customers needed a bank that knew their names, understood their needs, and then went the extra mile for them. More than three decades later, we have grown from a retail bank in one community to a multi-faceted financial services organization with deep roots in communities throughout Chicagoland, Wisconsin, Michigan, and even nationwide.
Today we operate 16 community bank charters, with over 200 branch locations and bank and non-bank business units in more than 30 states, provinces, and territories across the U.S. and Canada. Our unique business model is a competitive strength and value driver, powered by our talented colleagues who make the difference by putting our customers first and achieving demonstrably better results.

Years later as a banker with Wintrust/Town Bank, I decided to display the metal nameplate at my teller station. Over the years, I have shared that story of my nameplate with my clients. One client asked to take the nameplate home to spiff it up by adding a beautiful wood backstop with a stand display, and even polished and plated it. I look at it now and think of its evolution over the 100+ years since it was on my grandfather’s door, and I couldn’t be prouder to have it. And it’s all thanks to my clients!”
